'Grey's Anatomy' Launches New Sapphic Romance Between Amelia Shepherd and Dr. Toni Wright in Season 22

In the latest episode of Grey's Anatomy Season 22, airing last week, Head of Neurosurgery Amelia Shepherd reconnects with Dr. Toni Wright, a new plastics resident at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, sparking a passionate sapphic romance. Amelia, portrayed by Caterina Scorsone, recognizes Toni, played by Jen Landon, from their med school days, where Amelia believed Toni disliked her. Confronting her directly, Amelia learns Toni harbored a crush on her, leading the two to an on-call room to address their longstanding sexual tension.

This marks Amelia's first significant on-screen romance since her relationship with Dr. Kai in Season 19, played by E.R. Fightmaster. Scorsone told Shondaland that Amelia was originally conceived as a queer character, noting her debut episode featured a relationship with a female fellow that was cut for time. She highlighted past teases, such as Amelia's crush on Carina DeLuca, but emphasized the Kai arc as the first on-camera depiction of her queerness. Scorsone described Amelia as "officially the longest-running queer character on television."

The storyline arrives amid recent challenges for queer representation on the show, following Amelia's sabbatical after a traumatic explosion that killed Dr. Monica Beltran and the departures of other sapphic characters like Helm. Coverage notes a perceived "queer drought," with limited sapphic arcs involving characters like Teddy and Millin. Dr. Wright stands out immediately, dismissing Ben Warren's bravado and establishing her confidence.

Toni asks Amelia on a date, but Amelia hesitates, citing her son Scout, a factor that ended her relationship with Kai, who did not want children. She fabricates a "sunrise hike" excuse before confessing the truth; Toni reveals she is also a single mother living with her sister, who helps with her son, leading to a rain-checked date. Scorsone addressed Amelia's readiness for romance, stating to Shondaland: “Amelia is so gun-shy about life that she can’t picture beyond, like, next week. She’s still in this place of emotional and psychological guardedness, with complex PTSD from all of the trauma she’s been through.”

LGBTQ+ media outlets have celebrated the rapid progression of the romance, contrasting it with past "crumbs" and prolonged teases. Autostraddle described the pair's chemistry as "coy" and beaming, while DIVA Magazine called it a "hard-launched" and "super hot" development welcomed by fans. Lesbian Mojo praised the episode for delivering "more sapphic action than we had all last year combined," highlighting the electric tension from med school flashbacks.

Scorsone commended the show's approach: “One of the things that’s so refreshing about our show is that we’ve always shown things are more complex than a binary. The world is always evolving, and the characters are always meeting new situations with curiosity and adventure.” While fans express excitement, they note potential complications ahead, given Grey's Anatomy's history of dramatic twists. The storyline underscores ongoing sapphic visibility in network television, building on arcs like Carina DeLuca's past relationships.

If you didn’t know it already the term “reality TV” is a misnomer---there is nothing real about it. Producers set up scenarios to induce conflict, story arcs are created and promises are broken. Take a look at the new Netflix documentary “Reality Check: Inside America’s Top Model” to see what I mean. However, reality TV remains one of the top-rated genres on small screens today, especially the competitive ones, and that could be because strategy can’t be scripted in an ever-changing social environment, strategy ebbs and flows with each situation.  Some are better at it than others. Gay or straight, truly effective people can manipulate people without them knowing it, allowing them to sometimes make it to the finish line undetected. After all, it’s just a game.  Below we take a look at some queer contestants who strategized their long game and, villainous or not, used their smarts as a weapon.

Much like sports used to be, country music was also a homophobic workspace. No matter how talented you were, or determined, if you were gay, it was best to stay in the closet or just kiss your Grand Ole Opry dreams goodbye.  Today it’s a different story and while the country music scene is still a conservative one, queer folks now have zero interest in hiding who they are, and to them, storytelling is still a musical art no matter what lane you choose.  Some of these trailblazers are listed below. All of them talented and worth a listen on your music app. Turn up the volume, let your hair down and your Pride flow!
