Billie Eilish, the 10-time Grammy-winning artist known for hits like "Birds of a Feather" and "Wildflower," is in talks to star in a new film adaptation of Sylvia Plath's seminal semi-autobiographical novel 'The Bell Jar.' The announcement, first reported on March 11, 2026, positions this as Eilish's feature acting debut, building on her brief screen appearances including a role in the 2023 Prime Video series 'Swarm' and hosting 'Saturday Night Live' in 2021.

Directing the project is Sarah Polley, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind the 2022 script for 'Women Talking,' who is also penning the screenplay. Polley's involvement brings prestige to the adaptation, given her track record in exploring complex female narratives. No other cast members have been announced, and production details such as release date or distributor remain under wraps.

'The Bell Jar,' published in 1963, follows Esther Greenwood, a bright college student navigating the expectations of 1950s America. During a prestigious summer internship at a New York City magazine, Esther grapples with societal pressures around marriage, motherhood, and personal ambitions, leading to a profound mental health crisis involving disillusionment, harsh treatments, and therapy. The novel's unflinching portrayal of mental illness has resonated across generations, particularly among women and young adults facing similar pressures.

This marks only the second attempted feature adaptation of Plath's work, following a 1979 film directed by Larry Peerce starring Marilyn Hassett and Julie Harris. Previous efforts, including projects involving Julia Stiles, Kirsten Dunst with Elle Fanning, and a Showtime series directed by Frankie Shaw, all failed to materialize.

Eilish's transition to acting aligns with her established ties to cinema. She contributed "What Was I Made For?" to the 2023 'Barbie' soundtrack, earning the Best Original Song Oscar in 2024, and previously won for "No Time to Die" from the 2021 James Bond film, making her the youngest two-time Oscar winner born in the 21st century. Her 2024 album 'Hit Me Hard and Soft' featured Grammy-winning tracks, solidifying her status as a global music icon with over a decade of chart-topping success.

While the project has no direct ties to LGBTQ+ communities in announced details, Plath's exploration of identity, ambition, and mental health holds relevance for transgender people and others in the community who navigate societal expectations and mental health challenges. Eilish, who has publicly discussed her own experiences with body image and mental health, brings a personal lens to Esther's story of self-discovery amid pressure. Sarah Polley's films often center marginalized women's voices, potentially amplifying themes of nonconformity resonant with queer narratives. No official statements from LGBTQ+ organizations or community responses have surfaced yet regarding this adaptation.

The collaboration between Eilish's raw emotional delivery in music and Polley's nuanced directing style could redefine Plath's legacy for modern audiences. As talks progress, further updates are expected from involved parties. This development underscores Hollywood's ongoing interest in literary adaptations addressing mental health, with Eilish poised to reach new creative heights.
