OUTtv, a streaming service focused on LGBTQ+ content, has revealed details of its latest programming slate, including a feature-length documentary centered on Luke Prokop, a 23-year-old openly gay professional ice hockey defenseman. Titled "The Hockey Player", the 90-minute film follows Prokop's journey in professional hockey after he publicly came out as gay in August 2021, at age 19, while holding an entry-level contract with the Nashville Predators organization.

Prokop, drafted by the Predators in the third round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, has since played for multiple teams across the American Hockey League and ECHL, including stints with Nashville affiliates and currently the Edmonton Oilers' AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. The documentary, directed by Jacqueline Doorey and produced by Taylor Prestidge for Upper Canada Films, draws from over 200 hours of behind-the-scenes footage captured over three years.

A synopsis describes the film as "blending intimate vérité footage with cinematic storytelling," charting Prokop's experiences amid the "intense pressures of professional hockey while challenging one of sport’s most traditional cultures." It highlights "both the physical demands of the game and the quieter personal battles beneath the surface, offering a timely reflection on identity, resilience and the power of authenticity to shift conversations far beyond the ice." Prokop has noted initial reservations about the project, stating, “There were reservations, 100 percent,” due to concerns over how footage from his time in Nashville might affect his NHL aspirations. He added, “I’m still trying to make it to the NHL. That’s my ultimate goal. And you don’t want to ruffle too many feathers doing so.”

The announcement coincides with heightened interest in hockey within LGBTQ+ communities, spurred by the HBO/Crave series "Heated Rivalry", which depicts rival pro hockey players in a secret romance and has become Crave's most-watched original series. Outlets have dubbed "The Hockey Player" a "real-life" version of the show, positioning it to attract new fans to the sport. Prokop is also promoting the film alongside discussions of his personal life, including his relationship with his boyfriend, five years after coming out.

Philip Webb, OUTtv's chief operating officer, emphasized the slate's focus on "the diversity and depth of LGBTQ+ storytelling," stating, “We’re continuing to back bold ideas from across the creative queer community and bringing viewers a line-up that’s ambitious, distinctive and built for a global audience.” The documentary is slated for a summer release, potentially during Pride Month in June, amplifying its reach within LGBTQ+ audiences.

Prokop's story underscores ongoing conversations about LGBTQ+ inclusion in professional sports, particularly in hockey, a sport historically viewed as conservative. As the first openly gay player under NHL contract at the time of his coming out, his documentary offers insights into the personal and professional challenges faced by LGBTQ+ athletes. OUTtv's broader slate includes other queer-focused titles like "Gay vs. Straight" and returning series such as "Willam’s Dark Room Duel", reinforcing the platform's commitment to diverse storytelling.
