John Lithgow, the acclaimed actor set to portray Albus Dumbledore in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter TV series, has revealed he nearly quit the project amid backlash against author J.K. Rowling's anti-trans views. In an interview with The New York Times, Lithgow stated he knows that "every interview I will ever do for the rest of my life this will come up," reflecting the persistent scrutiny surrounding Rowling's positions on transgender people.
Lithgow, who has never met Rowling, explicitly stated he does not agree with her views on transgender people. He described the Harry Potter story as "clearly on the side of the angels, against intolerance and bigotry," arguing it stands antithetical to transphobia. Earlier this year, Lithgow reiterated that the franchise embodies "good versus evil, kindness versus cruelty," calling Rowling's positions "ironic and inexplicable." However, he noted discomfort with calls for him to abandon the role, saying they made him "uncomfortable" and "unhappy."
Lithgow's support for transgender people aligns with his past roles exploring gender and queerness, including According to Garp , Love is Strange , and Jimpa , where he plays the grandfather of a transgender grandchild. In Jimpa, his transgender costar Aud Mason-Hyde praised Lithgow as "such a beautiful human to make work with" but expressed hurt over his Harry Potter casting, calling it "disconcerting" and "vaguely hurtful."
Lithgow is not alone among the new cast in distancing from Rowling. Nick Frost, cast as Hagrid, stated his views "don’t align in any way, shape, or form" with hers. Paapa Essiedu, playing Severus Snape, signed an open letter with 400 TV and film professionals expressing solidarity with the transgender community following Rowling's support for the UK Supreme Court ruling excluding trans women from the legal definition of women based on biological sex.
Original Harry Potter film stars have also voiced strong support for transgender rights. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, and David Tennant have publicly disagreed with Rowling's anti-trans rhetoric. These statements highlight a divide between the franchise's creative legacy of inclusivity and Rowling's personal views, resonating deeply within LGBTQ+ communities where fans and advocates continue to emphasize the series' messages against bigotry. The controversy underscores ongoing tensions in entertainment, as casts navigate working on projects tied to creators whose views on transgender people spark widespread debate.
