Nick Jonas Says He “Bombed” His Audition for Kristoff in Frozen

Nick Jonas has said that he once auditioned for the role of Kristoff in Disney’s Frozen, but that the audition went badly after he arrived unprepared for the singing portion.

Jonas discussed the previously undisclosed audition on an episode of Hey Jonas!, the podcast hosted by Jonas and his brothers, Joe and Kevin Jonas. The episode’s guests included Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel and Josh Gad, who voiced Anna, Elsa and Olaf, respectively, in the original film.

“Funny story I didn't realize I would be sharing today until this moment,” Jonas said before explaining that he had auditioned for Frozen.

“For Kristoff,” Jonas added.

An Unprepared Audition

According to Jonas’s account, the audition panel asked what he planned to sing. Jonas said he did not know.

The panel then asked whether he had brought sheet music. Jonas replied that nobody had told him to bring it, according to the published accounts of the conversation.

Jonas said he ultimately selected a musical-theater song on the spot. He summarized the result in blunt terms: “I bombed the audition. It was terrible.”

The account suggests that Jonas did not understand before arriving that the audition would require a prepared vocal performance. E! News reported that the film included a small solo singing part for Kristoff, making vocal preparation relevant to the casting process.

The Role of Kristoff

Kristoff is Anna’s love interest in Frozen, a 2013 animated film that became one of Disney’s best-known modern theatrical releases. The role was ultimately given to Jonathan Groff.

Groff’s performance included Kristoff’s solo “Reindeer Are Better Than People,” a short musical number associated with the character in the first film. The available reports about Jonas’s podcast disclosure do not establish how seriously he was considered after the audition or whether he reached a later stage of the casting process.

During the podcast conversation, Gad told Jonas that he had better chemistry with Bell than Groff. Jonas responded that he loved Groff but jokingly maintained that casting him would have been better.

The remarks were presented as part of a lighthearted discussion among Jonas, the podcast’s hosts and the Frozen guests. The available coverage does not indicate that Jonas’s comments represent a formal criticism of Groff’s casting or of the completed film.

Jonas and the Frozen Franchise

Jonas said that his household remains a fan of the Frozen franchise. He also said he did not watch the film out of resentment after failing to secure the role.

The disclosure arrives as Jonas continues to work across music, acting and podcasting. The Jonas Brothers’ Hey Jonas! podcast was included in an August 2026 video-podcast licensing agreement involving Disney+, Hulu and iHeartMedia.

Bell, Menzel and Gad are also associated with the forthcoming third Frozen film, according to coverage of their podcast appearance. The reports reviewed for this article do not say that Jonas is involved in Frozen 3 or that he has been offered a role in the sequel.

Why the Story Resonated

Jonas’s account offers a behind-the-scenes explanation for a casting decision that was made more than a decade ago. Rather than describing a dispute with Disney or the production team, Jonas attributed the unsuccessful audition to his own lack of preparation.

The story also underscores the distinction between a performer’s public profile and the specific requirements of a role. Although Jonas was already an experienced singer and performer, his telling of the event centered on not having prepared the requested audition material.

No evidence in the sources reviewed indicates that Jonas was close to being cast, that the production changed course because of his audition, or that the outcome was connected to any controversy. The documented news is that Jonas auditioned for Kristoff, arrived without the expected musical preparation, and later described the performance as unsuccessful.

The revelation was reported on August 18 and 19, 2026, placing it within the requested three-week news period.
