Martha Stewart has described a final conversation with John F. Kennedy Jr. during an appearance on the Season 16 premiere of The Real Housewives of New York City.
According to Stewart, Kennedy contacted her because he wanted advice about George, the political and lifestyle magazine he had founded.
At the time, Stewart was running Martha Stewart Living magazine, and she agreed to discuss the matter with him.
The co-pilot warning
During the dinner, Stewart asked Kennedy about his plans for the coming weekend.
Kennedy told her that he, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and Lauren Bessette were traveling to Martha’s Vineyard for a wedding.
When Stewart asked who would pilot the aircraft, Kennedy said that he would fly.
Stewart then asked whether he had a co-pilot, recounting Kennedy’s response as: “No, I don’t need a co-pilot.”
Stewart said she has repeatedly thought about the exchange and wished she had pressed Kennedy more strongly to arrange for a co-pilot.
“I feel sorry,” Stewart said while reflecting on the conversation.
The television appearance
Stewart shared the story while speaking with makeup artist Daisyye during the RHONY premiere.
The conversation arose as Stewart and Daisy discussed Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, an FX drama about Kennedy and Bessette-Kennedy.
The series launched on FX on February 12, 2026, according to the Reuters report.
The Real Housewives of New York City season premiere aired on September 8, 2026, on Bravo, with episodes available to stream the following day on Peacock.
Entertainment Weekly separately reported that the sixteenth season premiered on September 8 and that Stewart appeared in the season’s promotional material as a guest connected to the show’s story.
What is established about the crash
Kennedy, who was 38, died in a plane crash in July 1999 along with his wife and her sister.
The aircraft crashed into the Atlantic Ocean after Kennedy departed for Martha’s Vineyard, according to the reports reviewed for this article.
The accounts agree that Kennedy was piloting the single-engine aircraft and that Bessette-Kennedy and Lauren Bessette were aboard.
Stewart’s televised recollection is a personal account of a conversation that occurred before the crash; it does not establish that her warning caused, prevented or could have predicted the accident.
The renewed attention reflects the release of the drama and Stewart’s decision to recount a private interaction more than two decades after Kennedy’s death.
None of the reports reviewed provides new evidence that changes the established account of the crash or attributes a cause to Stewart’s conversation.
