A new Broadway revival of "Damn Yankees" will star Neil Patrick Harris as Applegate, the Devil figure at the center of the musical’s story, with Julianne Hough as Lola and Austin Scott as Young Joe Hardy. The cast was announced on September 27 at Yankee Stadium, where the performers met reporters and posed with Yankees players.
The production will mark the first Broadway revival of "Damn Yankees" since 1994, according to Major League Baseball’s announcement. The musical first opened on Broadway in 1955 and is based on Douglass Wallop’s novel "The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant".
A baseball partnership—and a new setting
Major League Baseball and its production label, MLB Studios, are partners in the production, a first for a Broadway musical, MLB reported. Producers are Lia Vollack, Haley Swindal and Julie Boardman; Sergio Trujillo is directing and choreographing.
The creative team is moving the story into a different baseball era. The new adaptation is set in 2000, when the Yankees were coming off three consecutive World Series titles, rather than retaining the original’s mid-century setting. The original musical used the Washington Senators as the Yankees’ rivals; in this production, the Baltimore Orioles take that role.
Trujillo told MLB that he worked with writers Will Power and Doug Wright on the adaptation and that updating the teams was part of bringing the story into the 21st century. The production’s Young Joe Hardy is also reimagined: MLB reported that he is Black and plays for the Orioles.
MLB deputy commissioner Noah Garden said the league sees the partnership as a way to connect baseball with other areas of culture, and described the musical as sharing baseball’s themes of high stakes and drama. The partnership is also a production link between the sport and a musical whose plot turns on a fan’s desire to help his team win. The New York Times described the story as a baseball enthusiast making a Faustian bargain to improve his beloved team’s chances.
The cast and the launch
Harris’s role is Applegate, the character who makes the bargain at the heart of the story. Hough will play Lola, who is associated with Applegate, while Scott will play Young Joe Hardy, the central baseball player. MLB said the production marks Hough’s Broadway musical debut.
The announcement was planned as a spectacle at the stadium, but rain disrupted the event. The New York Times reported that plans included Harris throwing a first pitch, Scott performing the national anthem and Hough bringing a baseball to the mound through dance; after a lengthy rain delay, the actors instead met players and held a press conference. MLB reported that the cast met Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge, who gave Scott a baseball lesson.
Harris said he was looking forward to Hough’s Broadway musical debut and praised her performance abilities in comments reported by MLB. Scott told MLB that he was learning the sport’s culture and language as he prepared for the role, rather than presenting himself as a baseball expert.
What is known so far
The announcement confirms the principal cast, venue, preview date, opening date, baseball partnership and major changes to the setting and teams. The cited announcements do not provide a complete cast list or describe all the changes planned for the new staging.
The project brings together Broadway performers and a major sports organization, while placing a familiar musical in a revised baseball context. Its next public milestones, according to the schedule announced, are the start of previews on March 24, 2027, and opening night on April 20.
