The record company lawyer who became one of the music industry’s most powerful figures, launching or resurrecting the careers of such superstars as Janis Joplin, Whitney Houston, Carlos Santana and Alicia Keys, has died, it was announced Monday. He was 94.

The greatest way to celebrate the “man with the golden ears,” as he was colloquially known, is to listen to the musicians and songs he was instrumental in turning into career artists and timeless hits, from starting his career at Columbia Records in the 1960s to today.

“I Will Always Love You,” Whitney Houston (1992)

The story is the stuff of music industry legend. Apparently, Davis and producer David Foster fought bitterly over the arrangement for Whitney Houston’s all-time hit, a cover of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You.” Davis wanted the final version of the song to feature its iconic 40-second a cappella intro, an experiment suggested by Houston's “Bodyguard” co-star Kevin Costner. Foster did not. Davis won out in the end.

“Smooth,”Santana ft. Rob Thomas (1999)

It was Davis who conceived of Santana's 1999 album, “Supernatural,” which paired guitar virtuoso Carlos Santana with some of the day’s hottest talents. The record won eight Grammys and gave Santana more success than he had ever enjoyed in his decades-long career. At its center is “Smooth” with Matchbox Twenty singer Rob Thomas, a track Santana originally hated but Davis convinced him otherwise — as he was wont to do.

“Freeway of Love,” Aretha Franklin (1985)

Aretha Franklin had long been a star before joining Davis at Arista Records later in her career. As the story goes, attending the Monterey International Pop Festival in 1967 was pivotal for a young Davis, who became so enamored with the performances that they transformed his approach to running Columbia Records. He'd just been named president of the label and used his power to bring a counterculture spirit to a company that had resisted rock ’n’ roll. But of the lineup, no act resonated with Davis quite like Big Brother, and in particular, the soulful singer Janis Joplin. Their partnership began then, when he took “Piece of My Heart” and suggested adding a chorus and shortening its run time and instrumentals — turning it into a No. 1 hit.

“Blinded by the Light,” Bruce Springsteen (1973)

Davis was an early adopter of Springsteen, as he was of many artists across his career. He gave the young singer-songwriter from New Jersey a chance in his early 20s and inspired him to write the everlasting single, “Blinded by the Light,” from his 1973 debut album, “Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.” It would sound like the stuff of mythology if it weren’t true.

“Fallin,’” Alicia Keys (2001)

It's not so much that Davis had a role in the debut single from the nascent, big-voiced Alicia Keys — but he was one of her first and most ardent supporters. He signed her to his J Records and helped make her the star she is today. He saw her greatness immediately and at the very beginning.

“Mandy,” Barry Manilow (1974)

Over 50 years ago, Davis threw a party to celebrate the release of Arista Records’ first Grammy record of the year nominee: Barry Manilow’s “Mandy.” Stevie Wonder showed up. So did John Denver and Elton John. What was a one-off celebration morphed into one of the best-known and most exclusive parties of the year: the annual pre-Grammy fundraising event hosted by Davis, including four months before his death. But his fabulous gala was not the only reason this song is included here: It is evidence of Davis’ ability to identify a hit and pair it with the right artist. “Piano Man,” Billy Joel (1973)

Billy Joel shared a tribute to Davis on his Instagram account on Monday, writing, “Clive Davis convinced me to sign with Columbia Records many years ago. He recognized the talent of great musicians and understood the power of contemporary music.” The album that he released immediately after said signing? “Piano Man.” Not bad work, Davis.

“Blame It on the Rain,” Milli Vanilli (1989)

Like every major music exec, Davis' aim wasn't 100% all the time — though he was a lot more accurate than most. His Arista label had huge success with country superstars Brooks & Dunn, R&B group TLC, singer-songwriter and producer Babyface, Houston, Franklin and more. He also initially knocked it out of the park with Milli Vanilli, the male pop duo, which had a huge hit with “Blame It On the Rain.” The pair would soon become the embarrassment of the industry when, after winning a Grammy the next year, it was revealed that they weren’t actually singing their songs.

“Since U Been Gone,” Kelly Clarkson (2004)

Davis and Kelly Clarkson had a complicated relationship. Davis found “Since U Been Gone,” one of the biggest songs of her career, for Clarkson but wrote in his memoir that she didn’t want to record it originally. Clarkson says it is because she was told she would cowrite the song, but by the time she got to Sweden to work with producers and songwriters Max Martin and Dr. Luke, it had already been completed. It’s both yet another example of Davis’ keen ear — and his fallibility.

Being gay in your 50s means you’ve survived a lot. Whether that’s the political turmoil of the ‘80’s, the queer renaissance of the ‘90s or the advancement of LGBTQ rights of the 2000’s, it’s a milestone not only politically but personally. However, DJ Bill Bennett, although having endured the above, and who usually writes songs about released  “Upside Down World (Pride Version,” a mid-tempo ballad that pays tribute to the victims of the 2016 Pulse nightclub massacre which took 49 lives and wounded 58.  It goes to show that queer music isn’t always about euphoric dance floor anthems, or sexual wokeness, it can also be a place holder for important parts of gay history lest we “never forget.”



Zolita — “Hell’s Belles”

Zolita’s “Hell’s Belles” may be the most gleefully sapphic fever dream of 2026 so far. The video turns a girls’ reform camp into a lesbian cult thriller, complete with seduction, power games, and sisterhood. It’s campy, sexy, cinematic, and self-aware; it’s what Zolita does best. 



Towa Bird — “Dog”

Towa Bird’s “Dog” earns its place with a video that plays directly with gender, power, submission, dominance, and queer confidence. Featuring Katy O’Brian, the visual leans into the tension between masculine and feminine presentation while turning surrender into something stylish, and rainbow electric. It’s a bold piece of media that’s less interested in being safe than it is about being emboldened, which makes it one of the year’s more interesting queer rock-pop visuals.



Maiah Manser — “Feeling It All”

“Feeling It All” is queer nightlife for Gen Z. Inspired by underground LGBTQ+ clubs and the freedom Manser felt dancing with her girlfriend, Taking place wholly in the rain, the video captures that rare feeling of being safe enough to completely let go. Its queerness is not just in the subject matter, but in the atmosphere: the energy of the dance floor, the percussive tempo of lust, and the feeling that the club itself is a temporary queer sanctuary.



Peaches — “No Lube So Rude”

Peaches returned in 2026 exactly as we knew she would: explicit, political, ridiculous, and controversial. “No Lube So Rude” turns sex talk into a queer resistance fantasy, packed with Berlin underground energy, erotic absurdity, and punkish rebellion. It is one of the year’s most provocative videos because it treats pleasure not as impulse, but more like a political maneuver.



Kehlani feat. Missy Elliott — “Back and Forth”

Queer artist Kehlani’s “Back and Forth” video brings queer R&B vibes into a house-party setting, with dance, intimacy, and star power all moving through the same room. The great Missy Elliott brings her presence into the mix giving the video an extra layer of swagger, while Kehlani’s effortless sensuality keeps the whole thing grounded in flirtation and emotional heat. It may be more party-driven than narrative-heavy, but as a 2026 visual from one of R&B’s most visible queer artists, it brings Pride energy onto the dance charts.



VANÈS — “STARF*CK” 

VANÈS’ “STARF*CK” brings queer toxicity, attraction, and power struggles into a darker alt-pop space. The start of the video contains a flashing lights warning that feels more like parody than a safety message. But the video and song thrive on contradiction: soft but aggressive, playful but confrontational, vulnerable but fully aware of the manipulation happening underneath. Its queerness lives in that emotional push and pull, capturing the thrill of realizing you might be getting played — and deciding to play back.

In the interview, Charli said she has “been really struggling” with her mental health and, “if I’m being real, I’m in the worst place mentally that I’ve been in my life,” a line that has since been widely cited by entertainment outlets. She added that her emotions feel “very, very volatile at the minute,” underscoring that her current challenges are not only about career fatigue but also about how constant public attention shapes her day‑to‑day emotional state.

According to court filings, some posts falsely alleged that Norton was seriously ill, had been hospitalised, and that his mother had died, content his legal team described as “untrue”, “deeply distressing” and designed to cause alarm and reputational harm.

The California court granted Norton what is known as a discovery order, compelling Meta to disclose account‑level data that can help identify the individual or individuals behind The Westminster Wire. Reports indicate that this includes information such as registration details, IP addresses and associated contact data, which Norton’s lawyers say are essential to enable them to pursue a substantive claim in the courts of England and Wales.

Norton’s legal team argued that without this order he would be “unable to bring claim or obtain the injunctive relief urgently need to stop the ongoing harassment,” according to language quoted from court documents. The case was filed in California because Meta Platforms, Inc., the parent company of Facebook, is headquartered in the state, making it the appropriate jurisdiction to seek an order compelling the company to hand over internal account records.
