An Outer Banks prequel series is in development at Netflix, with original creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke working on its script.

Pate confirmed the project’s status in an interview published ahead of the premiere of Outer Banks’ fifth and final season. “We’re working on the script,” Pate said.

Pate said the creators are developing the project with Netflix and are focused on refining the story. “We’re working hard on it with our awesome partners from Netflix, and we’re just trying to get all of it as good as it can be,” he said.

Season 2 of Heated Rivalry has begun filming and is scheduled to premiere in spring 2027 on Crave in Canada and HBO Max in the United States.

The update comes as creator Jacob Tierney has offered a clearer account of the creative direction for the new season, saying the queer hockey romance will emphasize emotional impact and sensuality rather than relying primarily on surprise twists.

“This show is not built on secrets,” Tierney told The Hollywood Reporter, according to The PinkNews. “It’s built on feelings and sensation.”

Tierney also said that viewers seeking plot information can consult Rachel Reid’s source material, because much of the upcoming story is already available in the books that inspire the series.

“What’s so funny about the level of secrecy is like there’s a book – you can just look at it,” Tierney said. “It’ll tell you honestly, 90 percent of what you’d like to know is in that book.”

The story remains centered on Shane and Ilya

The first season introduced professional hockey players Shane Hollander, played by Hudson Williams, and Ilya Rozanov, played by Connor Storrie, whose rivalry develops into a secret romantic relationship.

Gillian Anderson has said that she was using crystal methamphetamine when she was arrested after entering her high school as a teenager.

The Drug Enforcement Administration has joined the investigation into the death of actor Hayden Panettiere, according to sources familiar with the matter cited by ABC News, CNN and The New York Times.

Greenville City Police Department in South Carolina remains the lead investigative agency, with the DEA assisting the local inquiry.

The DEA has not publicly confirmed its participation. TMZ reported that a DEA spokesperson declined to confirm or comment on active investigations.

The agency’s reported involvement does not establish that drugs caused Panettiere’s death or that criminal conduct occurred. Authorities have not announced a final cause or manner of death.

Panettiere, who was 36, died Sunday at a residence or apartment complex in Greenville, South Carolina.

“As of last week, I’ve stepped away from Goose,” Chadwick wrote.
