Dominic Fike and Hunter Schafer are at the center of renewed relationship speculation after reports placed the former couple together in Chicago and Seattle in late August and early September.
The latest development came when Fike introduced his song “Great Pretender” during a recent show by saying that he had written it about his “girlfriend.” He then added, “I used to not be able to say that.”
Fike did not name the person he was referring to. The available report therefore does not independently establish that the comment concerned Schafer.
What Has Been Reported
Schafer was reportedly seen at Fike’s concert at Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom on Aug. 27. Other reports said the pair were seen together in Chicago, including at a restaurant, although those accounts were based on eyewitness submissions and social-media material rather than statements from either performer.
A report published by India Times said that further sightings allegedly occurred in Seattle on Aug. 31, where Fike was performing as part of his current concert schedule. The report described claims that the two visited a pop-up shop and were later seen leaving a venue together.
Cosmopolitan separately reported that Fike was seen with Schafer at a bar before his Sept. 1 Seattle performance opening for Green Day. The same report said that fans had interpreted the sightings as possible evidence of a reconciliation, while noting that neither performer had confirmed a renewed relationship.
The reports differ in the level of detail they provide, but they converge on two points: Schafer was reportedly present at one of Fike’s recent performances, and the pair were subsequently reported to have spent time together away from the stage.
Why “Great Pretender” Became Part of the Story
The concert comment drew particular attention because fans have associated “Great Pretender” with Schafer. PinkNews reported that online users connected Fike’s reference to the former couple, although the outlet emphasized that Fike did not identify Schafer as the person he called his girlfriend.
That distinction is important. A performer’s reference to an unnamed girlfriend is not confirmation of a particular relationship, and the available reporting does not provide a direct statement from Fike identifying Schafer.
The footage of the remark was reportedly recorded by an audience member and circulated on TikTok before being discussed in media reports. The existence of the recording supports the fact that Fike made the quoted remark, but it does not resolve whom he meant.
Their Previous Relationship
Fike and Schafer met while working on the second season of HBO’s Euphoria, in which Schafer plays Jules Vaughn and Fike joined the cast as Elliot.
The pair publicly confirmed their relationship in February 2022 by sharing a photograph of themselves kissing. Fike later confirmed that they had separated, and he discussed his decision to step away from relationships during a conversation with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe.
Schafer discussed the breakup in a 2024 interview and described it as a mutually agreed-upon separation. She also said that infidelity had affected the relationship and that the experience had changed her.
Those earlier comments have been referenced in recent online discussion about the new sightings. India Times included questions from social-media users about the couple’s previous breakup while reporting on the Seattle claims.
What Is Confirmed and What Is Not
It is confirmed that recent media reports have described Fike and Schafer as being seen in the same locations, and that Fike referred to an unnamed “girlfriend” while introducing “Great Pretender.”
It is not confirmed that Fike’s comment referred to Schafer, that the two have resumed a romantic relationship, or that reports of public affection accurately describe what occurred. PinkNews, Cosmopolitan and India Times each noted the lack of official confirmation from the performers.
For now, the most supportable conclusion is that the former couple’s recent reported interactions have generated renewed public interest, not that a reconciliation has been established. Neither Fike nor Schafer has publicly confirmed that they are together again.
